One of Sri Lanka’s major cities, Kandy is situated in the country’s Central Province. It served as Sri Lanka’s final capital city during the reign of its ancient monarchs. Kandy is a city of administration and of religion. It serves as the province of Central’s capital. The Temple of the Tooth, one of the most revered Buddhist temples, is located in Kandy. Kandy’s climate is a little chilly. It can make you grin and relax your worn-out body.
Background of Kandy’s history

Tourist attractions in Kandy
- Temple of Tooth – Dalada Maligawa:-The tooth relic of Lord Budhha is preserved in the Dalada Maligawa which is situated in the heart of Kandy. There are beautiful paintings in this place and this is the most sacred place for all Buddhists. The Bo branch originally brought by Sangamitta Thera from India was planted in this place. Devotees and visitors come to this place in big crowds. As a result, the place is a bit crowded. This is the main tourist attraction that is not missed by any visitor who visits Kandy. In 1988 it was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
- Kandy Lake(Kiri Muhuda):-Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, is a major tourist attraction. It is an artificial lake made in the heart of Kandy which was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe.
- Hanthana Mountain Range:-This is a popular hiking, camping and bird-watching spot. There are seven peaks in the mountain range. Among them, Ura Kanda is the highest peak. This mountain range is covered by mist. It is famous among university students and named the “Adara Kanda”(mountain of love).
- Udawattakele Forest:- Udawattakele Forest is situated on the hillside behind the Dalada Maligawa. The Senkanda Cave and the Garrison cemetery are some important places found in Udawattakele.
- Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue:-There’s a giant Buddha statue, which is built with people’s generous donations. This huge white Buddha statue can be seen from anywhere in Kandy.
- Nelligala International Buddhist Center:-This is a famous International Buddhist Centre visited by many tourists.
